I like to know the foundation of something, why it works, so then I can change it, creatively, to make it something new.

About

Vicki’s passion for design sparked early—long before she knew it would become her lifelong career.

“I remember when my parents moved into their house in the ’60s. There were model homes, and I’d go back over and over again just to walk through them. I found it interesting at a very young age.”

A summer spent in Florida, where her family visited a home completely different from the Midwest style she grew up with, sealed the deal. She was hooked—fascinated by architecture and how people live in their spaces.

With over 45 years in the industry, Vicki brings a deep and diverse background to the Mountainwood Homes team. She’s worked in everything from the furniture business, remodeling, model homes, new construction, floor display, management, and ran her own design business. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design, giving her a strong foundation in architectural history. The experience of fellow students critiquing her work taught her to think deeply about design decisions.

“If you’re going to start mixing things in an eclectic way, you need to understand how these styles work together. The ‘why’ helps you break the rules so you can create something new.”

Vicki is a curious, intuitive, and creative problem-solver who approaches every project like a design detective—always asking why something works (or doesn’t) and digging deeper to understand the client. She’s tuned in to how clients want to feel in their space, even if they can’t fully describe it themselves.

She thrives when clients are open to working within a process they may not understand, willing to learn, be involved in it, and is open to design ideas.

“When a client has their own ideas to make their home more personal, that makes me excited to do the research, try to figure it out, and solve the problems to make it a reality,” Vicki adds.

“Sometimes it takes engineering, special products, custom services – and if a client is open to exploring those types of things, I really like to go on the ride.”

Outside of work, Vicki loves to bake and leans toward French cooking. She enjoys taking classes at The Kitchen at Middleground Farms—her latest adventure was exploring Thai cuisine. She also visits family in the Upper Midwest and Southern California, including three stepdaughters and six grandchildren, as often as she can.

  • Spends Sundays with a group of girlfriends exploring different Portland neighborhoods over lunch and a walk
  • She loves the science of baking—she always follows a recipe exactly the first time and then experiments. “Once you know the science, then you can get creative. You have to understand what you can and can’t change.”
  • Currently repairing a quilt she made 29 years ago for her niece as a baby, who’s now expecting a baby of her own. Vicki even found scraps of the original fabrics to weave into the new design
